Annabel's throwing Classes

On The Potter's Wheel

As Spring arrives, it is an absolute delight to announce that Wightman Studio is now offering classes in wheel throwing, a technique of shaping clay on the round using a potters wheel.

Classes will be held by Ceramic artist Annabel Wightman, in the corner of Compass Courtyard, a beautifully landscaped East Anglian Farm setting.

The term 'throwing' means shaping. As the pottery wheel turns constantly, triggered by the foot, the clay rotates so you can mould it into your desired shape with your two hands.

Annabel will show you the steps of throwing a pot on the potters wheel from start to finish. Learn about centering, opening out, pulling the walls, and cleaning up your pots. By the end of the session you will have a small collection of thrown pieces to be glazed and fired, ready for you to collect.

The Wheels

Shimpo

The shimpo wheel is manufactured in Japan. The word shimpo means 'improvement', other meanings are to advance, progress or proceed. On that note, why not sign up to a taster class at Wightman Studio, and if you like learning to throw, there is also a 6wk course on offer. There are two wheels only in the space so only two people can learn at a time. Handbuilding will be brought in at some point according to the requirements of individuals. Please send a message via the button link.

Terracotta

Earthenware Clay

Terry (as potters like to call it), or terracotta is a smooth, grit free and easy to use clay. It looks like chocolate, but don't try and eat any mid class. To dream about chocolate mid class is fine, but the classes are for learning. terracotta has just the right amount of earth bound quality to still the mind, bring you back to centre and make something in the process. Connecting to this clay will remind you where it all began.
