August at Wightman Gallery
Dear Readers,

Thank you for your continued support of our journey at Compass Courtyard's Gallery and Studio space. As we approach our one-year mark, we reflect on a remarkable beginning, yet recognize the road ahead to become a fully established art gallery and pottery studio.

Louisa Marcq

Illustrator and Painter

Louisa Marcq is known for her light hearted illustrations of country side life.
A lifelong artist of the Suffolk landscape, she calls rural Suffolk her home and studio. Her latest painting emerged from the vibrant aftermath of Suffolk's Latitude festival, where the pulsing rhythms of the party scene gracefully surrendered to the earthy symphony of combine harvesters. Louisa will be included in our Folklore Exhibition in August 2025, alongside our other favourite illustrator Sara Rhys, Nick Edwards and ceramicist Sophie Wiltshire.

Mary Romer Greenfield

Mary, a graduate of Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, frequently features her work in the Eastern Open Artworks and has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Her pieces are part of collections worldwide. Recently, Mary has delved into the emotional responses evoked by memories. The forms of clouds have allowed her to capture the essence of gazing into the skies or remembering the radiance of cornfields at twilight. Her art, created with the transformative power of paint, encapsulates the energy, charm, and grandeur that envelop us when immersed in the natural world.

Nick Edwards
Animator and Wood Carver

Nick Edwards - Animator and Wood carver in Cabbage Wood, East Anglia
Lucy and I were captivated by our visit to Nick Edwards's woodland realm. Tucked among the trees, his workshop is a cozy sanctuary, and a delightful cabin along a restored wooden path provides refuge for joyful young birds. Ladders rest against the trees in an artful disarray, reflecting his whimsical ideas and vibrant artworks.
Nick's inaugural wooden bowl received acclaim at the gallery, resulting in a commission for two additional pieces. Watch for his latest works at the gallery, and don't miss his handcrafted French rolling pins featured in our Harvest programme. Nick aims to create four films over the coming decade, delving into themes from the terrestrial to the celestial for our anticipated Folklore Exhibition in August 2025, following his second art residency in Norway. We'll be keeping a close eye on Nick and regularly sharing updates on his journey.

Potter of the Month

Trisha Whitehead

We were delighted to welcome Trisha to our 6 week course, where she has truly flourished. Throughout the course, she crafted and glazed many a plate, and even experimented with wheel throwing. However, her pièce de résistance was a stunning hand-coiled terracotta vase, intricately decorated with coloured slip.

If you are interested in our 6 week course or a taster session in pottery, you can click the link below to book. Or pop us an email, wightmanstudio@gmail.com
We take pride in engaging with you during your visits, valuing your insights on the artworks and your experiences with clay, particularly its impact on your wellbeing. In light of  World Mental Health Day this October, we invite you to share how clay has contributed to your wellbeing. Please send your stories to wightmanstudio@gmail.com

Artist Update:
Fifth Garden gate made by Andy Harris for
Spains Hall in East Anglia

Andy Harris at his workshop
As dawn breaks, Andy sets out on a picturesque walk through Avon Valley, accompanied by his four dogs, a routine that has become a local sensation in South Hams. Simultaneously, he's creating a steel menagerie for gardening enthusiasts, meticulously shaping everything from metal creatures to robust vegetables with the skill of an exceptional garden sculptor.

Despite the scorching heat, Andy remains undeterred in his blacksmithing pursuits. His latest feat? Crafting a series of iron apples for an expansive three-meter garden gate. The image below shows his fifth masterpiece which now adorns Jamie Oliver's Spains Hall, and it's quite the sight! Curious about Andy's metal magic? Drop us a line at wightmangallery@gmail.com.
